Aluminum Smooth Sheets — EN AW-5754 & EN AW-1050A

Aluminum smooth sheets are flat-rolled aluminum sheet metal products with a mill-finish surface, used across construction, transport, marine, signage and electrical industries. ULAMEX supplies aluminum sheets in two complementary alloys: EN AW-5754 H111/H22 — a marine-grade aluminum-magnesium alloy with excellent corrosion resistance and structural strength — and EN AW-1050A H24 — a 99.5% commercially pure aluminum with superior formability and electrical conductivity. EN AW-5754 is a non-heat-treatable wrought alloy from the AlMg3 group, strengthened exclusively through strain hardening (cold working). The H111 temper represents a slightly strain-hardened condition — offering excellent formability while maintaining good structural integrity. The H22 temper is strain hardened and then partially annealed, delivering significantly higher tensile and yield strength for load-bearing applications. This alloy is classified as seawater-resistant and provides outstanding resistance to industrial atmospheres, alkaline solutions and salt spray environments.

EN AW-1050A is a 99.5% pure aluminum with the highest formability and deep-drawing capability in the aluminum sheet range. The H24 temper (strain hardened and partially annealed) provides a balanced combination of moderate strength and excellent ductility. Its high electrical and thermal conductivity makes it the preferred choice for bus bars, conductor plates, heat exchangers and reflectors. The material is food-safe (non-reactive) and suitable for chemical storage applications.

Chemical Industry (5754): Chemical-resistant vessel cladding, flue gas desulphurisation equipment, sewage plant components. EN AW-5754 resists attack from a wide range of chemicals and maintains its integrity in permanently wet conditions.

Material Comparison

EN AW-5754 vs EN AW-5083: 5083 offers approximately 15–20% higher tensile strength (275–350 MPa) but at significantly higher material cost. For the majority of marine and structural applications, 5754 provides the optimal balance of strength, corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness.

EN AW-1050A vs EN AW-3003: 3003 offers approximately 40% higher tensile strength (130–180 MPa) due to its manganese content, but at the expense of reduced electrical conductivity and formability. Choose 1050A when maximum formability, deep drawing or electrical conductivity is the primary requirement.

Aluminum sheet vs galvanized steel sheet: At approximately 2.70 g/cm³ vs 7.85 g/cm³, aluminum sheet is 65% lighter than steel. Aluminum provides inherent corrosion resistance without coatings, lower lifecycle cost and full recyclability — making it the superior choice for facade, transport and marine applications where weight and durability matter.

Aluminum sheet vs stainless steel sheet: Stainless steel offers higher strength and temperature resistance but at 3× the weight and 2–4× the cost per square meter. Aluminum is preferred when weight savings, thermal/electrical conductivity or cost efficiency are decisive factors.

Processing & Fabrication Guide

Bending: EN AW-1050A offers excellent cold bending performance with minimum bend radii of 0.5× thickness. EN AW-5754 H111 bends well at 1× thickness; H22 requires 1.5–2× thickness minimum bend radius.

Welding: EN AW-5754 is readily weldable by TIG and MIG processes using AlMg5 (ER5356) filler wire. EN AW-1050A is also easily weldable using AlSi5 (ER4043) filler. Preheat is generally not required.

Cutting: Both alloys can be processed by guillotine shear, laser cutting, waterjet cutting, plasma cutting and CNC routing.

Deep drawing: EN AW-1050A offers excellent deep-drawing performance. EN AW-5754 H111 is suitable for moderate forming operations.

Surface treatment: Anodizing (natural, black, coloured), brushing, polishing, powder coating and protective film application are all available.
