Black Steel Sheet

ULAMEX supplies hot rolled steel sheet and heavy plate for construction, fabrication and industrial applications across Europe. Our stock covers thicknesses from 1 to 50 mm in grades S235JR and S355J2 per EN 10025-2, with standard formats from 1000x2000 to 2500x12000 mm. Checker plate (tear/diamond pattern) is also available. Mill test certificate 3.1 is available on request for all sheet and plate products — please specify when ordering.

Hot Rolled Steel Sheet and Plate for Industry and Construction

Steel sheet and plate are fundamental materials in structural fabrication, shipbuilding, pressure vessel construction and general metalworking. Hot rolled sheet from ULAMEX features the characteristic dark mill scale surface and is produced to European standards EN 10029 (plate tolerances) and EN 10051 (strip and sheet from wide strip).

Our product range is divided by thickness. Sheet (Feinblech) covers thicknesses from 1 to 3 mm — used for enclosures, ducting and light fabrication. Medium plate spans 3 to 6 mm for structural connections, brackets and general steelwork. Heavy plate (Grobblech) from 6 to 50 mm is used for base plates, gusset plates, tank walls and heavy structural elements. All formats are available as cut-to-length plates from 1000x2000 to 2500x12000 mm.

Checker plate (also known as diamond plate or tread plate) with raised anti-slip pattern is available in thicknesses from 3 to 8 mm — commonly used for platforms, stair treads and vehicle flooring.

All sheet and plate products are supplied in weldable structural grades S235JR (1.0038) and S355J2 (1.0577), with S275JR on request. For projects requiring certified steel, every delivery can include a Werksprüfzeugnis 3.1 per EN 10204. Looking for aluminium sheet or stainless steel sheet? We carry those as well. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between steel sheet and steel plate?

The distinction is based on thickness. Steel sheet generally refers to material up to approximately 3 mm thick, while plate refers to material from 3 mm (or 6 mm, depending on convention) and above. In the German market, Feinblech covers thin sheet up to 3 mm, while Grobblech starts at 3 or 5 mm. ULAMEX supplies the full range from 1 to 50 mm thickness.

What sheet and plate sizes does ULAMEX stock?

Standard formats include 1000x2000, 1250x2500, 1500x3000, 1500x6000, 2000x6000, 2500x6000 and 2500x12000 mm. Availability varies by thickness and grade. The most common combinations are thin sheet (1–3 mm) in 1000x2000 and 1250x2500 mm, and heavy plate (10–50 mm) in 2000x6000 and 2500x6000 mm.

Can steel sheet be cut to custom dimensions?

Yes. ULAMEX provides cutting services including flame cutting for heavy plate, shearing for thinner sheet, and plasma/laser cutting on request. Please specify your required dimensions, tolerances and quantity in the quotation request.

What is checker plate and what is it used for?

Checker plate (also called diamond plate, tread plate, Riffelblech or Tränenblech) is steel sheet with a raised pattern on one side that provides anti-slip properties. It is commonly used for industrial platforms, stair treads, ramps, vehicle floors and decorative applications. ULAMEX stocks checker plate in thicknesses from 3 to 8 mm.

What steel grades are available for sheet and plate?

ULAMEX supplies steel sheet and plate in grades S235JR (1.0038) and S355J2 (1.0577) per EN 10025-2. S275JR (1.0044) is available on request. For boiler or pressure vessel applications, special grades per EN 10028 may be sourced. All deliveries include black steel product range traceability.

How do I calculate the weight of a steel plate?

Steel plate weight is calculated using the formula: length (m) x width (m) x thickness (m) x density (7,850 kg/m3). For example, a plate 2000x6000x10 mm weighs: 2.0 x 6.0 x 0.010 x 7,850 = 942 kg. A simpler reference: 1 mm thickness of steel weighs 7.85 kg per square metre.
