Aluminum Checker Plate — Engraved Sheets (Tread Plate / Diamond Plate)

Aluminum engraved sheets — also known as aluminum checker plate, tread plate, diamond plate or floor plate — are flat-rolled aluminum sheets with a raised anti-slip pattern pressed into one side during the rolling process. ULAMEX supplies aluminum checker plate in two alloy grades: EN AW-5754 for marine-grade, high-corrosion-resistance applications and EN AW-1050A for general-purpose, cost-effective anti-slip flooring. Pattern Types & Design

The anti-slip pattern is formed during hot rolling by pattern rolls pressed onto the sheet surface under high force. The reverse side remains flat (smooth), allowing direct mounting to substructures.

Quintett (5-bar pattern): Five short bars arranged in a staggered diamond formation. This is the most widely used pattern in Europe, offering multi-directional slip resistance regardless of the direction of foot traffic or load movement. Quintett pattern provides the highest anti-slip performance and is standard for industrial flooring, stair treads and vehicle floors.

Duett (2-bar pattern): Two parallel bars arranged in a linear formation. Duett provides directional anti-slip performance and a visually distinct, more decorative appearance. Used in lighter-duty flooring, interior applications and decorative wall cladding where aesthetics are as important as function.

Pattern height: Approximately 1.0–1.5 mm above the base plate thickness. The stated material thickness always refers to the base plate — the total height including the raised pattern is correspondingly higher.

EN AW-5754 checker plate is the preferred material for outdoor, marine and chemically exposed environments. The AlMg3 composition provides permanent corrosion resistance without surface treatment — ideal for applications where the checker plate is directly exposed to rain, salt spray, industrial chemicals or permanent humidity.

EN AW-1050A checker plate offers a cost-effective solution for indoor flooring, decorative applications and light-duty anti-slip surfaces where marine-grade corrosion resistance is not required. Its lower strength makes it easier to form and cut for custom fabrication.

Aluminum tread plate weight per m²: For weight calculation of checker plate, use the base thickness plus approximately 0.6 kg/m² for the raised pattern. Example: a checker plate with 2 mm base thickness weighs approximately 5.40 + 0.60 = 6.00 kg/m². For 3 mm base thickness: 8.10 + 0.60 = 8.70 kg/m².

Processing & Fabrication Guide

Bending: Checker plate can be bent with the pattern on the outside of the bend. Minimum bend radii are slightly larger than for smooth sheet due to the raised pattern — typically 1.5–2× base thickness for 5754, and 1× base thickness for 1050A.

Welding: EN AW-5754 checker plate is readily weldable by TIG and MIG processes using AlMg5 (ER5356) filler wire. EN AW-1050A can be welded with AlSi5 (ER4043) filler. Weld edges on the flat (reverse) side for best results.

Cutting: Guillotine shear, laser cutting, waterjet cutting, plasma cutting. When shearing, position the pattern side upward to avoid pattern damage.

Drilling & fastening: Drill from the flat side where possible. Standard mechanical fastening with bolts, rivets or self-tapping screws is straightforward.

Surface treatment: Anodizing, brushing, polishing and clear coating are possible. The raised pattern makes powder coating challenging — consult your coating supplier for checker plate-specific processes.
