Material Properties & Technical Specifications
The alloy EN AW-6060 T6 (numeric designation 3.3206, chemical composition AlMgSi) belongs to the 6000-series heat-treatable aluminum alloys and is the standard choice for extruded aluminium sections across Europe. The T6 temper is achieved through solution heat treatment and artificial aging, delivering an optimized balance of strength, formability and surface quality.

- Tensile strength (Rm): 190–220 MPa
- Yield strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 150 MPa
- Elongation at break (A%): ≥ 8%
- Brinell hardness (HB): 70–75
Physical properties:
- Density: 2.70 g/cm³ (66% lighter than steel at 7.85 g/cm³)
- Thermal conductivity: 200–220 W/(m·K)
- Electrical conductivity: 34–38 m/(Ω·mm²)

Applications by Industry
Construction & Architecture: Aluminum extrusion profiles are a staple of modern building design. They serve as structural frames for curtain wall facades, window and door frames, railings, balustrades and pergola construction. Their natural corrosion resistance eliminates the need for protective coatings in most exterior applications, reducing lifecycle costs for architects and general contractors.
Industrial Automation & Mechanical Engineering: T-slot aluminum profiles form the foundation of modular machine frames, workbench systems, safety guards and cleanroom enclosures. The slot-and-bracket assembly principle enables rapid reconfiguration without welding — a decisive advantage for lean manufacturing environments. Common applications include conveyor structures, pick-and-place gantries, robot cells and enclosure frameworks.
Solar & Renewable Energy: Aluminum profiles for solar panels serve as substructure rails in photovoltaic mounting systems on pitched roofs, flat roofs and ground-mounted arrays. The high strength-to-weight ratio minimizes roof loading while withstanding wind and snow loads per Eurocode 1. See our dedicated PV profiles range for anodized solar-specific sections.
Transport & Vehicle Manufacturing: Lightweight aluminum sections replace heavier steel profiles in trailer bodies, truck superstructures, caravan frames and rail vehicle interiors, yielding up to 66% weight savings that translate directly into fuel efficiency and increased payload capacity.
Furniture, Interior & Shopfitting: Aluminum profiles are used in shelving systems, display stands, shopfront frameworks and exhibition booth construction, where their clean lines and anodizing compatibility deliver a premium finish.
Agriculture & Horticulture: Greenhouse frameworks, irrigation system supports and livestock enclosure frames benefit from aluminum’s zero-maintenance corrosion resistance in humid and chemically aggressive environments.
Material Comparison: EN AW-6060 vs EN AW-6063 vs EN AW-6082
EN AW-6060 is the standard European extrusion alloy, offering the best surface quality and the widest range of extrudable shapes. It is preferred for architectural and general-purpose profiles. EN AW-6063 has a slightly higher magnesium content, delivering marginally higher strength and excellent anodizing response — the go-to alloy for visible facade and gate profiles. EN AW-6082 (PA6) is a structural alloy with tensile strength of 290–340 MPa, used where high mechanical loads demand greater section strength, such as bridge structures and heavy-duty machine bases.
Compared to structural steel (S235/S275), aluminum profiles offer 66% weight savings (2.70 vs 7.85 g/cm³) and superior corrosion resistance without painting. Against stainless steel, aluminum wins on both weight and cost while matching corrosion performance in non-marine atmospheric exposure.
Surface Treatment Options
All aluminum profiles are available in mill finish (raw/walzblank) as standard. Optional surface treatments include anodizing (natural silver, black or bronze finish per EN 12373), which creates a hard, abrasion-resistant oxide layer of 10–25 µm. For colour-matched architectural installations, powder coating in any RAL colour is available on request. Anodized and powder-coated profiles can be ordered alongside mill-finish stock.
Quality & Certification
ULAMEX is an EN 1090 and ISO 3834-2 certified supplier. Every delivery can be accompanied by a mill test certificate 3.1 per EN 10204, providing full traceability of chemical composition and mechanical properties from the smelter to your workshop. Our certified aluminum supplier status ensures compliance with CE marking requirements for structural applications per EN 1090-3.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between EN AW-6060 and EN AW-6063?
Both are 6000-series aluminum extrusion alloys with similar properties. EN AW-6063 contains slightly more magnesium and silicon, giving it marginally higher strength (Rm up to 245 MPa vs 220 MPa for 6060 T6) and a superior response to decorative anodizing. EN AW-6060 offers wider extrudability and is the default choice for general-purpose aluminium sections; 6063 is preferred for visible architectural profiles where surface finish is critical.
Can aluminum profiles be welded?
Yes. EN AW-6060 T6 profiles are weldable using TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) processes with 4043 or 5356 filler wire. Note that welding reduces the T6 heat treatment in the heat-affected zone, lowering local tensile strength to approximately 110 MPa. For load-bearing welded joints, post-weld heat treatment or mechanical reinforcement should be considered.
What is the standard length of aluminum profiles?
The standard extrusion length for aluminum profiles is 6,000 mm (6 metres). ULAMEX stocks all profiles in this standard length and offers custom cutting to size on request. For projects requiring lengths beyond 6 metres, special extrusion runs can be quoted.
How much does an aluminum profile weigh per metre?
The weight depends on the cross-sectional area. With a density of 2.70 g/cm³, a solid 40×40 mm aluminum bar weighs 4.32 kg/m, while a 40x40x2 mm hollow square profile weighs approximately 0.97 kg/m. Use the formula: weight (kg/m) = cross-sectional area (cm²) × 2.70 × length (m) / 100.
