Material Properties

All corrugated sieves from ULAMEX are produced from grade 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel wire – the most widely specified austenitic stainless steel for industrial mesh and screening applications. Grade 1.4301 (304) stainless steel provides reliable resistance to corrosion in atmospheric conditions, freshwater, steam, weak organic acids, and most alkaline cleaning agents. This makes it the standard material choice for stainless steel woven wire mesh used in food processing, water treatment, grain handling, and general industrial screening. The chromium content of 17.5-19.5 % forms a self-repairing passive oxide layer on the wire surface, preventing rust formation even in humid or outdoor environments. The nickel content of 8.0-10.5 % ensures the stable austenitic structure that gives the wire its excellent formability during the crimping process and resistance to impact and vibration during operation.

For applications requiring enhanced corrosion resistance – such as chloride-exposed coastal environments, chemical processing, or saltwater contact – corrugated sieves in grade 1.4404 (AISI 316L) are available on request. The addition of 2.0-2.5 % molybdenum in 316L provides significantly improved pitting resistance, which is critical for mesh operating in aggressive media.

Wire thickness determines the mechanical strength and service life of the mesh panel. Thinner wires (1.4-1.6 mm) are suited for light-duty screening and applications where minimal obstruction to flow is important. Heavier wires (2.5-4.0 mm) are specified for vibrating screen decks, mining classifiers, and installations subject to high abrasion and mechanical impact.

Aperture size (eye) defines the maximum particle size that can pass through the mesh. The 9×9 mm and 10×10 mm meshes are used for fine screening and grain classification. The 15×15 mm and 20×20 mm meshes cover the most common medium screening requirements. The 35×35 mm mesh is used for coarse pre-screening and heavy aggregate separation.

Weave type: All our corrugated sieves use a pre-crimped weave construction, where each wire is crimped (corrugated) before weaving. This creates a rigid, self-supporting mesh panel that maintains its flatness and dimensional stability under load – unlike plain-woven mesh, which can deform under vibration. For larger apertures combined with heavier wire gauges, lock crimp or double crimp weave patterns provide additional rigidity and prevent wire displacement during high-frequency vibrating screen operation.
