Engraved Sheets — Stainless Steel Checker Plate from ULAMEX
Stainless steel engraved sheets, also known as checker plates, tear plates, diamond plates or tread plates, are flat-rolled products with a raised lenticular or diamond pattern pressed into the surface during manufacturing. ULAMEX supplies engraved sheets in grade 1.4301 (AISI 304) in thicknesses from 2.0 mm to 6.0 mm and standard formats up to 1500×3000 mm. Designed for industrial flooring, platforms, stairways and architectural cladding, these sheets combine the corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel with reliable anti-slip performance. As a wholesale supplier with over 35 years of experience, we deliver stainless steel checker plate to customers across more than 20 European countries.
Material Grades and Properties
Our stainless steel engraved sheets are manufactured from grade 1.4301 (AISI 304 / X5CrNi18-10), the most widely used austenitic stainless steel in industrial applications. This chromium-nickel alloy contains approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, providing excellent corrosion resistance in atmospheric, freshwater and mildly chemical environments. The raised pattern does not compromise the material’s inherent properties — the base plate retains the full mechanical and chemical characteristics of grade 304.
| Property | Grade 1.4301 (AISI 304) |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | 500–700 MPa |
| Yield Strength (Rp0.2) | min. 190 MPa |
| Elongation (A5) | min. 45% |
| Hardness (HB) | max. 215 |
| Density | 7.93 kg/dm³ |
| Max. Service Temperature | up to 600°C (intermittent) |
For environments with chloride exposure, marine atmospheres or chemical contact, we can supply engraved sheets in grade 1.4404 (AISI 316L) on request. Grade 316L adds approximately 2% molybdenum for significantly improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
Available Dimensions and Formats
Our stainless steel engraved sheets are stocked in the most commonly requested thickness-format combinations. The table below shows our standard stock availability. Thicknesses are measured on the base plate (excluding the raised pattern height). All sheets are supplied in mill finish (pickled and passivated) with the characteristic raised diamond or lenticular tread pattern.
| Thickness Dimension | 2,0 | 3,0 | 4,0 | 5,0 | 6,0 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1000 x 2000 | x | x | x | x | |
| 1250 x 2500 | x | x | x | x | |
| 1500 x 3000 | x | x | x |
*Other dimensions and types available on request. Custom cutting (laser, plasma, waterjet) can be arranged through our processing partners.
Applications
Stainless steel engraved sheets are specified wherever a combination of corrosion resistance and slip-resistant surface is required. Their raised pattern increases surface friction even when wet or contaminated with oils and grease, making them the preferred choice for demanding industrial environments.
- Food and Beverage Processing: Platform flooring, walkways and stair treads in dairy plants, breweries, meat processing facilities and commercial kitchens where hygiene and slip resistance are equally critical.
- Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry: Access platforms, tank surrounds and process area flooring in plants handling corrosive substances. Grade 316L recommended for chloride-containing environments.
- Architecture and Interior Design: Decorative wall cladding, kick plates, elevator floor panels and entrance area flooring where the diamond pattern provides both visual interest and functional safety.
- Marine and Offshore: Deck plating, gangway treads and access platforms on vessels, harbour installations and offshore structures exposed to salt spray and seawater.
- Transport and Logistics: Loading ramp surfaces, truck bed flooring, trailer decking and warehouse platform covers where heavy foot traffic and equipment movement demand durable, non-slip surfaces.
- Industrial Facilities: Machine shop flooring, maintenance platforms, mezzanine floor panels and emergency exit stairways in manufacturing plants, power stations and utility installations.
Standards and Certifications
All stainless steel engraved sheets supplied by ULAMEX comply with EN 10088-2 for stainless steel flat products. The raised pattern conforms to established European manufacturing standards for checker and tread plates. Dimensional tolerances for base plate thickness follow EN 10029 for hot-rolled plate. Material test certificates EN 10204 Type 3.1 are available on request, confirming chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat traceability for each delivery. ULAMEX holds EN 1090 certification for structural steelwork and ISO 3834 for welding quality management — view our full certifications page for details.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between stainless steel 304 and 316L for engraved sheets?
Grade 1.4301 (AISI 304) is the standard choice for most indoor and outdoor applications. It provides excellent corrosion resistance in atmospheric conditions and is the most cost-effective austenitic stainless steel. Grade 1.4404 (AISI 316L) contains approximately 2% molybdenum, which significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments — such as coastal areas, swimming pool surrounds, chemical plants and food processing facilities using chlorinated cleaning agents. If your installation is exposed to salt spray, de-icing chemicals or aggressive cleaning solutions, we recommend 316L.
Can I obtain mill test certificates for stainless steel checker plates?
Yes. All engraved sheets are available with 3.1 inspection certificates per EN 10204 on request. These certificates confirm the chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat number of the specific material batch, providing full traceability from the steel mill to your project. This documentation is standard practice for B2B customers in construction, food processing and regulated industries. Please specify your certificate requirements when requesting a quote.
Are custom dimensions and cut-to-size engraved sheets available?
Yes. In addition to the standard formats shown in our stock table, we can supply engraved sheets cut to your specific dimensions. Cutting services include laser cutting, plasma cutting and waterjet cutting, arranged through our processing partners. Lead times for custom-cut sheets are typically 3-5 working days in addition to standard delivery time. Contact our export team at [email protected] or call +48 504 424 761 with your requirements.
What is the pattern height on stainless steel engraved sheets?
The raised pattern (lenticular or diamond shape) typically adds 1.0–2.0 mm to the nominal base plate thickness, depending on the manufacturing process and plate thickness. The stated thickness in our stock table refers to the base plate measurement. Pattern height is sufficient to provide effective slip resistance per industrial safety standards, even in wet or oily conditions. For specific pattern height requirements, please consult our technical team.
