Polishing and finishing stainless steel: 2B, brushed and mirror
Stainless steel is finished to a defined surface, from the standard mill 2B, through brushed satin, to a full mirror polish, and the choice affects appearance, corrosion resistance and hygiene, not just looks. European finishes are designated by EN 10088-2 codes such as 2B, 2R, 2G, 2J and 2P. A smoother surface holds less dirt and moisture, so it resists staining and cleans more easily, which is why finish is specified rather than left to chance. Why the finish matters
The surface finish does three jobs at once. It sets the appearance, from dull grey to a bright mirror. It affects corrosion resistance, because a smoother, more closed surface gives chlorides and dirt fewer micro-crevices to attack, so it stays passive longer. And it governs how easily the surface is cleaned, which matters wherever hygiene is critical. Choosing a finish is therefore an engineering decision as much as an aesthetic one, and the right finish is named on the specification alongside the grade.
Mill finishes: 2B, 2R and 2D
Most stainless sheet starts life in a mill finish. 2B is the standard cold-rolled, annealed, pickled and skin-passed finish, with a smooth, slightly reflective grey surface and a roughness of about 0.1 to 0.5 micrometres. It is by far the most common finish and the base for most polished and brushed finishes. 2R, also called bright annealed, is cold rolled and then annealed in a controlled atmosphere to give a brighter, smoother, more reflective surface that is easy to clean and resists contamination. 2D is a duller matte version without the final skin pass. Ground and brushed finishes: 2G and 2J
Directional finishes are produced by abrasive belts or brushes and give the familiar lined satin look. A ground finish, 2G, is produced with a coarser abrasive and shows a clear unidirectional grain, used where a uniform machined appearance is wanted. A brushed or dull polished finish, 2J, is finer and gives the silky satin surface seen on balustrades, kitchen equipment and architectural trim. These finishes are usually worked up from a 2B base, and the grain direction is specified so that panels match when assembled.
Bright polished and mirror: 2P
The highest reflectivity comes from bright polishing. A 2P finish is mechanically polished to a bright, highly reflective surface, and a full mirror polish takes the roughness down to around 0.02 to 0.05 micrometres, reflecting a clear image. Mirror finishes are used for decorative panels, lift interiors, signage and feature work. Because a mirror surface is extremely smooth and closed, it is also one of the most corrosion resistant and easiest to keep clean, though it shows fingerprints and scratches readily, so it is chosen where appearance justifies the care.
Electropolishing
Electropolishing is a chemical rather than mechanical finish. The part is made the anode in an acid bath and a controlled current dissolves a thin surface layer, preferentially removing peaks and leaving an ultra-smooth, bright, iron-free surface. It also enriches the surface in chromium, so it improves corrosion resistance as well as smoothness. Electropolishing is the standard finish for pharmaceutical, food and semiconductor work where the surface must be as clean and contamination-free as possible, and it is usually applied over a 2B or bright polished base.
Finish and corrosion resistance
Finish and corrosion are directly linked. A rough surface holds dirt, chloride and moisture in its micro-crevices and starves the passive film of the oxygen it needs to heal, so it stains and pits sooner. A smooth 2R, mirror or electropolished surface sheds contamination and stays passive far longer, which is why coastal and marine stainless is specified with a smooth finish as well as the right grade. Finish and hygiene
In food, catering, pharmaceutical and medical work the finish is a hygiene requirement. A smooth, closed surface, typically 2R, fine brushed, mirror or electropolished, gives bacteria and residue nowhere to lodge and lets the surface be cleaned and sanitised completely. This is why process equipment, worktops and sterile environments call for a defined low roughness rather than a general mill finish. The rougher the surface, the harder it is to clean to a hygienic standard, so finish is written into the specification.
Can you paint stainless steel?
Stainless can be painted or powder coated, but it needs proper preparation because its smooth, passive surface gives paint little to grip. The surface is abraded or blasted to a key and treated with an etch primer designed for stainless, after which a topcoat or powder coat holds well. Painting is done for colour matching or extra protection rather than corrosion resistance, since the stainless is already corrosion resistant underneath. For most uses the natural finish is preferred, and paint is reserved for cases where a specific colour is required.
Maintaining and restoring a finish
A stainless finish is kept by regular cleaning with mild detergent and water, wiping along the grain on brushed surfaces, and never with a carbon steel wire brush, which embeds iron and causes rust spots. Scratches in a brushed finish can be blended along the grain with a matching abrasive pad. Heavier damage, heat tint or contamination is removed by pickling and passivation, which restores both the appearance and the corrosion resistance. Keeping the correct finish clean is the simplest way to make stainless last and stay bright.
How polished finishes are produced
Brushed and polished finishes are built up in stages. Starting from a 2B or 2R base, the surface is worked with abrasive belts or wheels in a sequence from coarse to fine, each grade removing the scratches left by the one before. A satin brushed finish is reached at a medium grade, while a mirror finish needs the sequence carried much finer and then buffed with a polishing compound until the scratch pattern disappears and the surface reflects a clear image. Skipping grades leaves deep scratches showing through, so the progression matters as much as the final step, and consistent pressure keeps the finish even across a panel.
Ra roughness and what it means
Finishes are quantified by surface roughness, given as an Ra value in micrometres, which is the average height of the surface texture. A standard 2B sits around 0.1 to 0.5 micrometres, a mirror around 0.02 to 0.05, and a coarse ground surface much higher. The lower the Ra, the smoother the surface, and the better it resists corrosion and cleans, which is why hygienic and coastal specifications state a maximum Ra rather than just a finish name. Quoting an Ra removes ambiguity when a smooth surface is critical, and it gives the mill and fabricator a measurable target to meet.
