Chequer plate guide: patterns, grades and applications
Chequer plate is steel or aluminium plate with a raised anti-slip pattern rolled into one face, used for floors, walkways, stairs, ramps and vehicle beds wherever grip underfoot matters. The steel version is hot-rolled mild steel, usually S235JR, and the aluminium version is a lightweight, corrosion-resistant alternative. What chequer plate is
Chequer plate, also called tread plate, checker plate or floor plate, is a flat plate with a regular raised pattern pressed or rolled into its top surface during manufacture. The underside stays flat, so the plate lies and fixes like ordinary plate, while the raised top gives grip. It is made in both steel and aluminium, and it is one of the standard products for any surface that is walked or driven on and must not be slippery. The pattern is functional first and decorative second, though its regular look is also valued architecturally.
Pattern types
The raised pattern comes in a few standard forms. The classic is a raised diamond or crosshatch, with small diamonds across the surface. The teardrop or tear pattern uses short raised bars arranged so water and debris drain away and grip works in every direction. Two-bar and five-bar patterns group parallel raised bars in repeating sets, common on vehicle and industrial flooring. All of them do the same job of breaking up a smooth surface so a foot or tyre cannot slide, and the choice is mostly a matter of the look and the local standard.
How the pattern works
The point of chequer plate is traction. The raised pattern stands proud of the surface, so a boot or tyre grips the pattern rather than sliding on a flat, wet or oily plate. Because the raised bars run in more than one direction, grip works whichever way the load moves, and the gaps between them let water, oil and debris drain and clear rather than pool. This is why chequer plate is the default for ramps, steps and industrial floors that get wet or greasy, where a plain plate would be dangerous.
Base material and grades
Steel chequer plate is made from hot-rolled mild steel, typically S235JR to EN 10025-2, the same weldable structural grade used for black plate and sections, so it fabricates and welds the same way. Aluminium chequer plate is made from alloys such as 5754 or 1050A, giving a light, corrosion-resistant plate that needs no coating. How thickness is measured
Chequer plate is specified by the thickness of the base plate, measured on the flat underside and not including the raised pattern. So a 3 millimetre chequer plate is 3 millimetres thick on the base, with the pattern adding a little on top. This matters when ordering and when calculating strength and weight, because the base thickness is what carries the load, while the pattern only adds grip and a small amount of extra metal. Quoting the base thickness avoids any confusion about the true gauge of the plate.
Common applications
Chequer plate turns up wherever a strong, non-slip surface is needed. It floors walkways, gantries, platforms, mezzanines and access steps, forms ramps and thresholds, lines vehicle beds, trailer floors and van interiors, and provides stair treads and landing plates in industrial buildings. In lighter aluminium form it is used for toolboxes, steps and trims where weight matters. Anywhere people or vehicles move over a metal surface that could get wet or oily, chequer plate is the safe choice, which is why it is a staple of industrial and transport fabrication. It is also used for kick plates, machine covers and cladding where its patterned surface hides scuffs and wear better than a plain plate would.

Steel chequer plate suits heavy industrial floors, ramps and structures where strength and cost matter, while aluminium suits transport, outdoor and portable uses where weight and corrosion resistance count. The choice follows the load, the environment and the budget.
Finish and corrosion protection
Steel chequer plate is bare, black mild steel and will rust if left unprotected, so it is finished for its setting. Indoors it can be left bare or painted, and outdoors it is hot-dip galvanised for durable protection, with the raised pattern galvanising as readily as the flat plate. Working chequer plate
Chequer plate is fabricated like ordinary plate, with one thing to plan: the pattern direction. Because the raised pattern is directional, panels are set out so the pattern runs consistently across a floor and looks right where plates meet, and the grip direction is oriented to the traffic. Steel chequer plate welds, drills and bends like any mild steel, and the flat underside makes it easy to fix down. How chequer plate is specified
Chequer plate is specified by material, base thickness, pattern and plate size. The base steel is a structural grade such as S235JR to EN 10025-2, or an aluminium alloy for the aluminium version, so the underlying metal follows the same standards as flat plate. The raised pattern itself is a manufactured feature rather than a dimensioned structural element, so it is called out by type, diamond or teardrop, rather than by a tolerance. Stating the material, the base thickness measured on the flat, the pattern and the sheet size gives a complete order, with the base thickness driving strength and weight and the pattern providing the grip.
Anti-slip performance and maintenance
The grip of chequer plate depends on the raised pattern staying proud and clean. On a busy walkway or ramp the pattern gradually wears down under heavy traffic, and thick paint build-up can fill and smooth it, so both reduce the anti-slip effect over time. Keeping the plate clean of grease and debris, and not over-painting the pattern, keeps it working. Galvanising is a good choice on wet outdoor plate because the zinc protects the pattern without filling it the way heavy paint can. Where slip resistance is safety-critical, the plate is inspected and the surface maintained rather than left to wear smooth.
