Produced by hot rolling per EN 10056-1, these L-shaped steel profiles are available in two fundamental configurations: equal-leg angles (identical flange widths from 20×20 to 200×200 mm) and unequal-leg angles (different flange widths from 30×20 to 200×100 mm). Material Grades and Standards
All hot-rolled angle sections from ULAMEX are manufactured from non-alloy structural steel conforming to EN 10025-2, the European standard governing the technical delivery conditions for hot rolled steel products. Two primary grades are stocked:
- S235JR (material number 1.0038) — the most widely specified structural steel grade worldwide. Minimum yield strength 235 MPa (for thickness ≤16 mm), tensile strength 360–510 MPa, guaranteed Charpy V-notch impact energy of 27 J at +20°C. Formerly designated St37-2 under DIN 17100 and equivalent to ASTM A36 / A283 Grade D in American standards. S235JR is the default grade for general construction, fencing, gates, frames, brackets and all-purpose fabrication.
- S355J2 (material number 1.0577) — the premium high-strength structural grade. Minimum yield strength 355 MPa, tensile strength 470–630 MPa, with guaranteed impact toughness of 27 J at -20°C. Previously known as St52-3 (DIN 17100) and comparable to ASTM A572 Grade 50. S355J2 is specified wherever higher load-bearing capacity is required: heavy industrial structures, crane gantries, bridge components, offshore construction, and dynamically loaded frameworks.
Both grades are classified as fully weldable structural steels with carbon equivalent values (CEV) below 0.45. All standard welding methods are suitable — MIG/MAG (GMAW), MMA / electrode (SMAW), TIG (GTAW), and submerged arc (SAW) — without mandatory preheating for material thicknesses up to approximately 25 mm in S235JR and 15 mm in S355J2. S275JR (1.0044) is available on request.
Hot-rolled angles are manufactured to the dimensional standard EN 10056-1 (Structural steel equal and unequal leg angles — Dimensions) with tolerances per EN 10056-2. The combination of EN 10056 for geometry and EN 10025-2 for material properties ensures full compliance with European structural design codes including Eurocode 3 (EN 1993).

Standard lengths: 6,000 mm (6 m) and 12,000 mm (12 m). Cut-to-size sawing is available for non-standard requirements. All profiles feature the characteristic mill scale surface of hot rolled black steel, with rounded fillet radii at the internal corner.
Applications of Hot-Rolled Angle Steel
Hot-rolled steel angles are among the most fundamental building blocks of steel construction. Their simple L-shaped geometry makes them extraordinarily adaptable across a vast range of applications:
- Bracing and cross-bracing systems — equal-leg angles are the default choice for vertical and diagonal bracing in industrial halls, warehouse structures, transmission towers, and antenna masts. Single angles, back-to-back pairs, and star-formed arrangements provide lateral stability against wind and seismic loads per Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 8 requirements.
- Connection brackets and cleats — angle cleats are the most common connection type in structural steelwork, used for beam-to-column, beam-to-beam, and beam-to-wall connections. Both bolted and welded angle connections are standard practice, with design methods covered extensively in EN 1993-1-8 (Design of joints).
- Frame construction — platforms, mezzanine floors, walkways, stairway stringers, handrail posts, and equipment support frames. Angles form the edge members, bracing diagonals, and connection elements that tie structural assemblies together.
- Lattice structures and trusses — angle sections serve as chord members and web diagonals in welded and bolted lattice girders, roof trusses, and space frames. Double-angle configurations (back-to-back with spacer plates) are widely used for truss chords.
- Lintels and shelf angles in masonry — steel angle lintels support brickwork above window and door openings. Shelf angles support masonry cladding at floor levels in multi-storey construction, transferring the facade weight to the structural frame.
- General metalwork and fabrication — gates, fences, railings, grilles, machine frames, conveyor supports, tank stiffeners, and countless other fabricated steel products incorporate angle steel as a primary structural element.
- Infrastructure and civil engineering — bridge cross-bracing, guardrail posts, sign support structures, cable tray supports, and utility pole cross-arms.
- Shipbuilding — hull stiffeners, bulkhead frames, and deck beam brackets in vessel construction and offshore platforms.
Technical Properties
Hot-rolled angle steel in grades S235JR and S355J2 offers the robust mechanical performance that professional steel fabricators and construction engineers demand. The hot rolling process at temperatures above 900°C produces a normalised microstructure with uniform mechanical properties throughout the cross-section.
The characteristic mill scale (iron oxide layer) formed during hot rolling provides short-term corrosion protection during storage and transport. For permanent outdoor exposure, appropriate surface treatment is required — options include hot-dip galvanising per ISO 1461 (the most common choice for external steelwork), paint systems per ISO 12944 classified by corrosivity category C1–C5, thermal spray metallic coatings, or weathering steel alternatives (on special request).
Both grades are fully weldable with all standard processes. For S235JR up to approximately 25 mm thickness, no preheating is required. For S355J2, preheating should be considered above 15 mm wall thickness, depending on ambient temperature, heat input, and joint restraint. Filler materials: E42 class for S235JR, E50 class for S355J2.
Hot-rolled angles can be drilled, punched, sawn, sheared, flame-cut, plasma-cut and machined with standard workshop equipment. The internal fillet radius at the corner provides natural stress flow, making hot-rolled angles inherently more resistant to fatigue at the L-junction than cold-formed equivalents with sharp bends.
Physical properties: density 7,850 kg/m³, modulus of elasticity 210,000 MPa, shear modulus 81,000 MPa, thermal expansion coefficient 12 × 10⁻⁶ /K, Poisson’s ratio 0.3.
