WICKETS

Wickets — also referred to as pedestrian gates, walk-through gates or single-leaf fence gates — provide dedicated person-only access through panel fence systems without requiring the main vehicle gates to be opened. In any professionally designed perimeter fence installation, wickets serve as the everyday entrance and exit point for staff, visitors, residents and maintenance personnel, while the larger double-leaf driveway gates remain closed for vehicle-only access. ULAMEX supplies hot-dip galvanized wicket gates manufactured from 40×40 mm galvanized tube frames with welded mesh infill matching the 3D fence panel design, creating a visually consistent and structurally integrated transition within the fence line.

Construction and Frame Design

Every ULAMEX pedestrian gate is constructed from a welded 40×40 mm square tube frame in structural steel S235JR, hot-dip galvanized after fabrication per DIN EN ISO 1461. The post-fabrication galvanizing process is critical — it ensures that all welds, cut edges and internal tube surfaces receive the same zinc coating as the parent material, eliminating the unprotected spots that pre-galvanized tube construction would leave at every weld joint.

The frame is infilled with welded mesh matching the 3D fence panel specification: mesh opening 50×200 mm, wire diameter 4 mm (standard) or 5 mm (heavy duty). The V-bend reinforcements characteristic of 3D panels are reproduced in the wicket mesh infill, ensuring visual continuity along the fence line. When the wicket is closed, it appears as a seamless continuation of the adjacent fence panels — the only distinguishing feature is the hinge-side gap and the latch mechanism.

The frame tube dimensions are deliberately lighter than the main gate frame (which uses 60×40 mm or heavier profiles) because the wicket leaf is narrower and carries less wind load. The 40×40 mm profile provides more than adequate structural rigidity for a single-leaf gate up to 1,200 mm wide, while keeping the gate leaf weight manageable for daily operation with self-closing hardware.

Standard Dimensions and Sizing

ULAMEX wickets are manufactured in a standard width of 1,000 mm (clear opening), with a 1,200 mm width option available for wider pedestrian access or accessibility requirements (wheelchair access, pushchairs, maintenance equipment). The gate height is matched to the adjacent fence panel height, ensuring a flush top line along the entire fence perimeter:

  • Panel height 1,030 mm → wicket height 1,030 mm
  • Panel height 1,230 mm → wicket height 1,230 mm
  • Panel height 1,530 mm → wicket height 1,530 mm
  • Panel height 1,730 mm → wicket height 1,730 mm
  • Panel height 2,030 mm → wicket height 2,030 mm
  • Panel height 2,430 mm → wicket height 2,430 mm

Non-standard heights and widths are available on request for projects with specific access requirements. The wicket requires two dedicated gate posts — these are heavier-gauge posts (typically 80×80 mm or reinforced 60×40 mm with 2.0 mm wall) capable of supporting the gate leaf weight plus the dynamic forces generated during opening, closing and wind loading. Gate posts are supplied separately and should be specified at the time of ordering.

Hardware and Self-Closing Mechanism

Each ULAMEX wicket gate is supplied complete with the following hardware:

  • Self-closing hinges — adjustable spring-loaded hinges that automatically return the gate to the closed position after each passage. The self-closing mechanism is essential for security applications where the gate must not be left standing open, and for livestock or pet enclosures where open gates create escape risks. The spring tension is adjustable to control closing speed and force.
  • Integrated latch mechanism — a gravity latch or slide bolt that engages automatically when the gate closes. For keyed access control, cylinder lock sets are available as an upgrade option. The latch height is positioned at approximately 1,000 mm from ground level for comfortable hand operation.
  • Ground clearance adjustment — the hinge system allows vertical adjustment of the gate leaf to accommodate variations in ground level, ensuring smooth operation even on slightly uneven terrain. Standard ground clearance is 50–80 mm.
  • Stop mechanism — prevents the gate from swinging beyond 90° or 180° (depending on installation), protecting the hinges and adjacent fence components from overextension damage.

All hardware components are galvanized or stainless steel to match the corrosion resistance of the gate and fence system. Replacement hardware sets are available individually for long-term maintenance.

Surface Finish Options

Wickets are available in two standard finish options:

  • Hot-dip galvanized (HDG) — the pure zinc surface provides 30–50+ years of maintenance-free corrosion protection in typical outdoor environments (corrosivity category C2–C3 per EN ISO 9223). The silver-grey zinc appearance weathers naturally over time to a matte grey patina.
  • Galvanized + RAL powder coat — the zinc surface is overcoated with a polyester powder coating in RAL 7016 (anthracite grey), RAL 6005 (moss green) or other RAL colours on request. This duplex system (zinc + organic coating) provides both enhanced corrosion protection and colour aesthetics, with a typical coating life of 15–25+ years before recoating is required.

For visual consistency, the wicket finish should match the adjacent fence panels and posts. ULAMEX supplies all fence system components — panels, posts, clamps, wickets and gates — in matching finishes from the same production batch to ensure colour uniformity.

Applications of Pedestrian Gates

The galvanized pedestrian gate is a standard requirement in virtually every panel fence installation. Typical positioning and use cases include:

  • Staff and visitor entrances — positioned alongside or separate from the main vehicle gate at industrial, commercial and logistics sites. Allows controlled pedestrian flow without compromising vehicle gate security.
  • Residential garden access — side entrances, rear garden gates and pedestrian access to driveways. The self-closing mechanism ensures the gate returns to the closed position, maintaining garden security and pet containment.
  • Emergency exit points — in long fence runs (e.g., solar farm perimeters, warehouse compounds), wickets at regular intervals provide emergency egress as required by workplace safety regulations.
  • School and sports facility access — controlled pedestrian entry points with optional key-lock access to prevent unauthorised entry outside operating hours.
  • Agricultural property entrances — farm access gates that prevent livestock from escaping while providing convenient daily access for farm personnel.
  • Construction site temporary fencing — reusable wickets in temporary panel fence installations provide defined pedestrian access points during the construction phase.

Ordering Wickets as Part of a Complete Fence System

ULAMEX recommends specifying wickets at the design stage of your fence project to ensure correct post spacing, gate post specification and finish coordination. When requesting a quotation, please provide:

  • Number of wickets required
  • Preferred width (1,000 mm standard or 1,200 mm wide)
  • Height (to match adjacent panel height)
  • Opening direction (left-hand or right-hand swing, inward or outward)
  • Surface finish (HDG or HDG + RAL colour code)
  • Lock type (standard gravity latch, cylinder lock or padlock provision)

Combine wickets with 3D fence panels, fence posts, clamps and driveway gates for a complete, professionally specified perimeter fence system. As a dedicated fence gate and fence accessories wholesale supplier, ULAMEX delivers all components from stock with full corrosion protection compatibility and consistent finish quality.
