C-Channels — Stainless Steel Structural Channels from ULAMEX
Stainless steel C-channels (also referred to as U-channels or UPN profiles) are hot-rolled structural sections with a characteristic C-shaped cross-section, combining a web and two parallel flanges. ULAMEX supplies C-channels in grade 1.4301 (AISI 304) in standard length 6000 mm, with dimensions ranging from 50×38 mm to 160×65 mm and wall thicknesses from 5.0 to 7.0 mm. These profiles are essential structural components for frameworks, supports, conveyor systems and architectural constructions in corrosive environments. With over 38 years in the steel wholesale trade, ULAMEX delivers stainless steel channels to industrial customers across Europe.
Material Grades and Properties
Our stainless steel C-channels are manufactured from grade 1.4301 (AISI 304 / X5CrNi18-10), the most widely specified austenitic stainless steel for structural applications. This chromium-nickel alloy offers an exceptional combination of strength, ductility, weldability and corrosion resistance — making it suitable for both load-bearing and exposed structural elements where long-term maintenance-free performance is required.
| Property | Grade 1.4301 (AISI 304) |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | 500–700 MPa |
| Yield Strength (Rp0.2) | min. 190 MPa |
| Elongation (A5) | min. 45% |
| Hardness (HB) | max. 215 |
| Density | 7.93 kg/dm³ |
| Weldability | Excellent (TIG, MIG, MMA) |
For applications in marine, chemical or chloride-exposed environments, C-channels in grade 1.4404 (AISI 316L) are available on request. The added molybdenum content in 316L provides substantially improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, making it the preferred choice for harsh industrial atmospheres.
Available Dimensions
The table below shows our standard stock of stainless steel C-channels. All profiles are supplied in standard length 6000 mm, hot-rolled, in pickled and passivated mill finish. Dimensions follow the format height x flange width in millimetres.

*Other dimensions and types available on request. Custom cut-to-length service available — sawing to your specified dimensions.
Applications
Stainless steel C-channels are versatile structural profiles specified for load-bearing and support applications where corrosion resistance and mechanical strength must work together. Their C-shaped section provides excellent bending resistance along the primary axis, making them ideal for spanning structural members.
- Construction and Architecture: Structural frameworks for canopies, mezzanine supports, facade substructures, balustrade posts and exposed ceiling beams. Stainless steel channels in visible architectural applications can be supplied in brushed or polished finish on request.
- Food and Beverage Industry: Equipment support frames, conveyor system structures, processing line frameworks and overhead crane rails in dairy, brewing, meat processing and bakery facilities. Grade 304 withstands regular washdown cycles; grade 316L for chlorinated cleaning environments.
- Chemical and Pharmaceutical Plants: Pipe support racks, cable trays, walkway stringers and equipment mounting frames in corrosive atmospheres. C-channels resist degradation from acid vapours, humidity and chemical splash common in process industries.
- Marine and Offshore: Hull stiffeners, superstructure frameworks, deck support members and gangway structures on vessels, platforms and harbour installations. Grade 316L recommended for direct saltwater and spray exposure.
- Mechanical Engineering: Machine base frames, guide rails, sliding mechanisms and structural elements in automated production lines, packaging equipment and material handling systems.
Standards and Certifications
Stainless steel C-channels from ULAMEX comply with EN 10088-3 for stainless steel semi-finished products and EN 10279 for hot-rolled steel channels (dimensional tolerances and shape). Material composition and mechanical properties conform to EN 10088-1. Inspection certificates EN 10204 Type 3.1 are available on request, providing full heat traceability with certified chemical analysis and mechanical test results. ULAMEX holds EN 1090 certification for structural steel components and ISO 3834 for welding quality management — see our certifications page for details.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between stainless steel 304 and 316L for C-channels?
Grade 1.4301 (304) is the standard and most cost-effective choice for indoor structural applications, general construction and environments without significant chloride or chemical exposure. Grade 1.4404 (316L) contains molybdenum, which provides markedly better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Choose 316L for marine structures, coastal installations, chemical plants, swimming pool environments and food processing facilities that use chlorinated cleaning solutions. Our team can advise on the optimal grade for your specific application.
Can ULAMEX cut stainless steel C-channels to custom lengths?
Yes. While our standard stock length is 6000 mm, we offer a precision sawing service to cut C-channels to your exact requirements. Multiple pieces can be cut from a single bar to minimise material waste. Include your required lengths and quantities when requesting a quote, and we will provide pricing inclusive of cutting.
Are stainless steel C-channels suitable for structural applications under EN 1090?
Yes. ULAMEX is certified to EN 1090 for structural steelwork, which covers the supply of structural stainless steel components for construction. All C-channels are available with EN 10204 Type 3.1 inspection certificates confirming grade, dimensions and mechanical properties. This certification ensures compliance with the European Construction Products Regulation for load-bearing steel structures.
What is the weight per metre of stainless steel C-channels?
Weight varies by dimension. Indicative weights for grade 1.4301: the 50x38x5 mm channel weighs approximately 3.86 kg/m, the 80x45x5 mm approximately 6.33 kg/m, the 100x50x5 mm approximately 7.87 kg/m, and the 160x65x7 mm approximately 16.90 kg/m.
