What stainless steel sections are
A section is a long product with a shaped cross-section, an angle, a channel or a T, used to build frames, supports and edges where a flat bar or a round tube will not do the job. In stainless steel the section carries the same corrosion resistance as sheet and tube, so it is chosen wherever a structural or finishing member must resist rust in food, marine, chemical or architectural work. The grade sets the corrosion resistance, and the form is chosen for the load and the joint: angle for frames and edges, channel for beams and supports, T-section for partitions and stiffeners.

Hot-rolled and laser-welded sections
Stainless sections are made two ways, and the method affects the sizes, the corners and the price. Hot-rolled sections are formed from a single billet, giving a rounded root radius, and are limited to the sizes a mill rolls. Laser-welded (laser-fused) sections are built from strip and plate joined with a full-penetration laser seam, which gives a sharp, near-square corner and a very wide range of sizes and leg combinations that hot rolling cannot reach.

For a standard angle or channel in a common size, hot-rolled is the economical choice; for a sharp architectural corner or a non-standard size, a laser-welded section is specified.

State the grade, form, dimensions, finish and length with an enquiry, add the 3.1 certificate requirement, and note whether hot-rolled or laser-welded is preferred, so the delivered section matches the design.
How to specify a section
Angle is specified by leg lengths and thickness, channel by height, flange width and thickness, and T-section by flange, web and thickness, all supplied in standard mill lengths. Give the grade, form, dimensions and finish, state whether hot-rolled or laser-welded, and add the length and the 3.1 certificate requirement where the part needs them. For a welded structure, choosing a low-carbon grade such as 304L or 316L at the specifying stage avoids sensitisation at the joints later.
Applications
Stainless sections frame and finish work across sectors. Food and beverage plants use 316L angle and channel for hygienic frames, supports and machine bases that are washed down daily. Marine and coastal structures use 316L and duplex sections for railings, walkways and support steel. Architecture uses brushed and polished angle and T-section for facades, glazing, balustrades and feature trims. Fabricating stainless sections
Stainless sections drill, weld and finish like other stainless products, with a matching low-carbon filler, 308L for 304 and 316L for 316. Keep sections and offcuts away from carbon steel tools and grinding media to avoid iron contamination that later rusts, and passivate welded joints to restore the passive layer. For welded structures a low-carbon grade avoids sensitisation, and for architectural work the weld and any grinding are blended and re-finished to match the section surface.
Bolting and joining sections
Sections are joined by welding or by bolting, and for a bolted stainless frame the fasteners are matched to the section grade to avoid a corrosion mismatch. A2 fasteners (304) suit inland and general frames, and A4 fasteners (316) suit coastal, marine and chemical structures, per ISO 3506. Carbon steel fasteners are kept out of a stainless frame, because the galvanic couple between carbon steel and stainless corrodes the fastener first in a damp environment. Where a stainless section must meet a carbon steel structure, an isolating washer or sleeve breaks the galvanic path so neither member suffers accelerated corrosion at the joint.
Stainless versus carbon sections
Stainless sections are chosen where corrosion resistance, hygiene or appearance justify the cost over carbon or galvanised sections. Carbon steel angle and channel are stronger for the price and suit dry, painted or enclosed structural work; galvanised sections handle outdoor structural use where a zinc coating manages corrosion.
