How to choose a fence
Choosing a fence starts with the job it has to do, privacy, security, demarcation or architectural looks, and only then moves to the material and style: aluminium for light, rust-free, low-maintenance boundaries, and galvanised steel for rigid, high-security or industrial lines. Privacy comes from the panel style rather than the metal, exposure decides the corrosion protection, and height and wind loading are set by local rules. Start with the job the fence must do
Every good fence choice begins with its purpose, because that drives everything after it. A privacy screen for a garden or terrace has different requirements from a security perimeter around a yard, and both differ again from a low demarcation boundary or a purely architectural feature. Deciding first whether the priority is to block sightlines, to resist intrusion, to mark a line or to look good sets the style, the material and the height before any product is compared. A fence chosen the other way round, by product first, often meets the wrong need.
Privacy comes from the style, not the metal

It is not: an open palisade or mesh panel gives no privacy whatever the metal, while a close horizontal or vertical slat panel screens the view. Privacy is set by the slat spacing and orientation, so a louvred or close-slat design in aluminium or steel gives the screening, and the spacing is chosen to trade privacy against airflow and wind load. If a fully private boundary is the goal, a close-slat system is specified; if only partial screening is wanted, the slats are spaced to suit.
Security: rigidity and height
Where the fence has to resist intrusion or impact, rigidity and height matter more than looks. Galvanised steel is stiffer and takes a knock that would dent aluminium, which is why steel mesh and palisade are specified for commercial, industrial and security perimeters. A taller panel, anti-climb detailing and a robust post and foundation all add to the security, and the required height is confirmed against local rules. For a light residential boundary this rigidity is unnecessary, but for a yard, plant or public site it is the deciding factor.
Aluminium or galvanised steel
The core material decision is between aluminium and galvanised steel, and each wins in a different setting. Aluminium is light, does not rust, needs almost no maintenance and carries a clean powder-coated finish, which makes it the default for residential and architectural fences. Galvanised steel is heavier and much more rigid, giving the strength and impact resistance that security and industrial boundaries need. Matching the style to the setting
Once the material is settled, the style follows the setting and the purpose. Horizontal slat, or louvred, panels are the most popular contemporary choice and give privacy set by their spacing. Vertical slat gives a different architectural line, palisade offers a lighter, secure boundary with spaced bars, and welded mesh suits security and industrial perimeters. A modern property usually reads best with horizontal slat, while a plant or yard is better served by mesh or palisade. Exposure and corrosion
Where the fence stands changes the material decision. In coastal air, near pools or on wet, exposed sites, aluminium has a real advantage because it does not rust at all, so its powder-coated finish stays clean with only occasional washing. Galvanised steel also performs well in these conditions provided the zinc coating and powder finish are intact, and any edge cut on site is re-protected, so corrosion cannot start there. Inland and in sheltered settings both materials last for decades, so exposure only becomes decisive in harsh or salt-laden air.
Finish and colour
Both material lines are powder-coated, which gives the colour, the UV resistance and the maintenance-free surface. A polyester powder coating of a minimum 60 micron thickness holds its colour and gloss for 20 years or more, and the same RAL palette is used across aluminium and steel so a fence, gate and posts read as one system. Anthracite grey RAL 7016 dominates the European market, with jet black RAL 9005, light grey RAL 7035 and white aluminium RAL 9006 also standard, and any RAL colour available on a wholesale order.
Maintenance over the life of the fence
Choosing for the long term means weighing the upkeep, not just the first cost. Aluminium is essentially maintenance-free: it does not rust, rot or need repainting, and a wash keeps it looking new. Galvanised and powder-coated steel needs little more, as long as the coating is kept sound and any damage or cut edge is touched up promptly with zinc-rich paint and matching powder. Neither metal fence carries the repainting and rot burden of timber, which is a large part of why metal boundaries are specified for low-maintenance sites.
Cost: upfront against whole life
Cost is best read across the life of the fence, not only at purchase. Aluminium generally costs less upfront and is cheaper to handle and install because it is light. Galvanised steel costs more at the outset but its rigidity and long service life can make it the lower cost over the years on a demanding site, where an aluminium panel might be damaged and replaced. The right answer depends on the exposure, the security need and how long the fence must last, so the whole-life view usually beats a purely upfront comparison.
Height, wind and the rules
How high a fence may be, and what wind load it must resist, are set by local building and planning rules and by the relevant Eurocode for the country and the exposure, so they are confirmed before a system is chosen. Wind load in particular shapes the choice: a close, private panel catches far more wind than an open mesh, so an exposed or private boundary needs heavier posts, deeper foundations and closer post spacing.
